Picturesque Christmas Village

Twinkling chalets and festive lights transform Zermatt into a cozy winter haven. Though lacking a large Christmas market, the village charms with picturesque scenes and seasonal delights. Mulled wine and holiday treats scent the air in narrow lanes. Local shops offer crafts, while eateries serve Swiss specialties. Residents' ornate decorations turn Zermatt into a storybook setting. Quaint churches and stunning Alpine vistas complete this enchanting tableau. The "Bahnhofstrasse" is beautifully transformed with Christmas decorations and charms visitors with a magical atmosphere. Zermatt is in my opinion the most beautiful Swiss village and it seems to come straight out of a fairytale with the snow-capped peaks and the mighty Matterhorn.

There is nothing better to come back to your hotel after a long and joyful day in nature, surrounded by the prettiest snow-covered landscape.

Cultural Highlights: The English Church

Brave British climbers first conquered the Matterhorn, leaving their mark on Zermatt. The English Church, built in 1840, stands as a tribute to these pioneers. Also called St. Peter's, it houses Reverend Charles Hudson's tomb beneath its altar. For centuries, Anglican priests have held masses here, continuing a rich tradition. During Christmas, this picturesque church offers a unique experience, blending alpine charm with British heritage. Visitors can immerse themselves in history while enjoying festive services in this iconic Zermatt landmark.

Indulge In Raclette, Fondue and other Swiss Specialties

The Swiss mountain regions offer a variety of local specialities that will keep you happy and full during your vacation. Dive into the rich, melted Raclette, a cheese delight often scraped onto diners' plates. Savour the communal experience of Fondue, where bread is dipped into a pot of melted cheese. Beyond these, Switzerland boasts an array of dishes, from hearty stews to delicate pastries. Most hotels and resort offer special Christmas dinner options so there is something for every palate. Make sure to book your table in advance.

Don't miss out to try Swiss chocolate in Zermatt. There is a cute Lindt shop in the village and most places offer delicious hot chocolate to enjoy on a cold winter day.

Hiking Or Snowshoeing

Zermatt has plenty to offer for non-skiers as well. One of the favorite activities apart from skiing is hiking or snowshoeing. The region boasts a myriad of trails that meander through pristine snow-covered landscapes, offering breathtaking views of the iconic Matterhorn and surrounding peaks. Whether you're strapping on snowshoes for the first time or are an experienced hiker seeking a winter challenge, Zermatt provides the perfect backdrop. With trails ranging from gentle paths to more challenging routes, there's an adventure waiting for everyone. Rental services available here.

Sledging and Train Rides

Next to the classical winter sports you should absolutely book a train ride on the Gornergrat Railway. This train ride will bring you all the way to the Gornergrat and you can enjoy the Matterhorn views all along the way. At the Gornergrat Kulm you can enjoy a snack, enjoy the panorama and later go for a little snow walk. If you are more adventurous you should absolutely rent a sledge and enjoy the thrill from Rotenboden station down to Riffelberg. With a day pass you can sledge as much as you want!
