Planning a 10-day itinerary to cover the best places in Switzerland can seem daunting, especially with so many spectacular views, outdoor activities, and world-class attractions to choose from in the beautiful country. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, this guide will help you navigate your Swiss adventure, ensuring you experience the best that Switzerland has to offer. I have been living for the past 30 years and call it my home country. Therefore, I know almost every corner of beautiful Switzerland.
This 10-day Switzerland itinerary is designed to help you explore the most breathtaking landscapes, from the shores of Lake Lucerne to the peaks of the Matterhorn, and everything in between. We’ll cover the best time to visit, how to get around, and provide detailed daily plans filled with activities, tips, and recommendations for where to stay and what to see. Note that you can always stay a few days longer in one place and truly experience the best things to do fand soak it all in!

Day 1: Explore Zurich
Welcome to Zurich which is mostly known as cosmopolitan heart of Switzerland. Your journey begins in Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland and a hub of international finance, culture, and history. Zurich is not only a gateway to the Swiss Alps but also a city rich in cultural experiences, from art galleries to historic sites. As the largest city, Zurich offers an excellent mix of old and new, where medieval architecture meets modern luxury. You can fly in from basically anywhere in the world to Zurich Airport or trains will get you to Zurich from any major city in Europe.
What to Do in Zurich
Explore the Old Town (Altstadt including Niederdörfli): Start your day by wandering through Zurich’s Old Town, where narrow, winding streets lead you past beautifully preserved medieval buildings. The area is packed with historic sites, charming shops, and cozy cafes, making it a great place to get a feel for the city’s history and culture. On your walk don't miss places like Fraumünster, Paradeplatz, Grossmünster, Rennweg, Opera House and Quaibrücke.
Visit the Grossmünster: One of Zurich's most iconic landmarks, the Grossmünster is a twin-towered Protestant church that dates back to the 12th century. Climb the 187 steps to the top of the tower for some of the best views over the city.
Take a Boat Cruise on Lake Zurich: A relaxing boat cruise on Lake Zurich offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the city skyline. The shores of Lake Zurich are lined with parks, promenades, and beaches, making it a perfect spot to unwind after your journey.
Indulge in Swiss Chocolate: No trip to Switzerland is complete without sampling some of the world’s best chocolate. Visit the famous chocolatiers like Sprüngli or Teuscher, or take a chocolate walking tour that will guide you through the city’s sweet spots. You can always stop by the grocery stores like Migros and Coop which have a huge range of the best Swiss chocolates.
Relax at Hürlimann Baths and Spa: After a day of sightseeing, unwind at the Hürlimann Baths and Spa. Located in a former brewery, this spa offers a unique Roman-Irish bath experience and a rooftop infinity pool with panoramic views of Zurich. Book here

Where to Stay in Zurich
Budget: Zurich Youth Hostel offers clean, affordable accommodation with easy access to public transportation, perfect for budget-conscious travelers.
Mid-range: 25hours Hotel Langstrasse is a trendy hotel with eclectic decor and a vibrant atmosphere, located in one of Zurich’s most dynamic neighbourhoods.
Luxury: B2 Hotel is a book-lover’s paradise, with a stunning library lounge and a location adjacent to the Hürlimann Baths and Spa, offering a luxurious stay with a cultural twist.
The Alex Lake Zurich, Widder Hotel and Hotel Storchen are high-end luxury hotels of the Living Circle and the most responsible option to choose from. While the Widder and Storchen are located literally in the heart of the old town the Alex hotel is at the shores of Lake Zurich and you can get by boat to Zurich city centre.



Day 2: Zurich to Lucerne via St. Gallen
On your second day, you’ll travel from Zurich to Lucerne, but not before making a detour to St. Gallen, a hidden gem in eastern Switzerland which is mostly overlooked. This charming town is known for its baroque architecture and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Abbey of St. Gall, which houses one of the oldest and most beautiful libraries in the world.

How to Get to St. Gallen
Scenic Route: If you’re up for a longer but scenic journey, take the train from Zurich to Schaffhausen and then continue to St. Gallen via Stein am Rhein. This route follows the Rhine River and offers stunning views of Lake Constance. The entire trip takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes. You can even glimpse the Rhine Falls which are just stunning!
Direct Route: If you prefer to reach St. Gallen quickly, take a direct train from Zurich, which takes about 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes. After exploring St. Gallen, you’ll board the Voralpen Express to Lucerne, a journey that takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes and passes through picturesque landscapes. All covered if you have the Swiss Travel Pass.
What to Do in St. Gallen
Visit the Abbey of St. Gall: The highlight of St. Gallen is undoubtedly the Abbey Library, often called the ‘Seventh Wonder of the World.’ This Rococo-style library is a treasure trove of medieval manuscripts, some dating back to the 8th century. The Abbey itself is an architectural marvel, with its intricate stucco work and grandiose interiors. That's also why it is an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983!
Continuing to Lucerne:
The Voralpen Express: The journey from St. Gallen to Lucerne on the Voralpen Express is a must for train enthusiasts. This route is part of the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland, offering panoramic views of lakes, rolling hills, and the distant Alps. As you approach Lucerne, you’ll start to see the majestic peaks that frame this beautiful city. Make sure to have a Swiss Travel Pass, so you can travel without worrying about train tickets at all.
What to Do in Lucerne
Explore the Old Town: Lucerne’s Old Town is a picturesque area with well-preserved medieval architecture, painted facades, and the famous Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), which dates back to the 14th century. The Chapel Bridge is Europe’s oldest covered bridge and a symbol of Lucerne, offering beautiful views of the Reuss River. Don't miss the Lion Monument on your walk. Take a Stroll Along Lake Lucerne: The shores of Lake Lucerne are ideal for a leisurely walk, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The lake is also the gateway to some of the most famous mountain excursions in Switzerland. If you fancy and have the time, go on a lake cruise. Visit the Swiss Museum of Transport: For those interested in trains, cars, planes, and boats, the Swiss Museum of Transport is a fascinating place to explore. Where to Stay in Lucerne
Budget: Backpackers Luzern is a great option for travelers looking for affordable, no-frills accommodation in a convenient location.

Day 3: Lucerne + Mountain Day Trip to Rigi, Pilatus, or Stanserhorn
Lucerne is surrounded by some of Switzerland’s most famous mountains, each offering unique experiences and panoramic views. Today, you’ll choose one of these iconic peaks for a day trip. They are all easily accessible out of Lucerne and offer fantastic views of the mountains around.
Mount Rigi: The Queen of the Mountains
Getting There: Take a boat ride from Lucerne to Vitznau, then hop on Europe’s first mountain railway to Rigi Kulm, the highest point on Mount Rigi. Alternatively, you can take a train from Lucerne to Arth-Goldau and switch to a cogwheel train up the mountain. Book your roundtrip here
Highlights: Known as the ‘Queen of the Mountains,’ Mount Rigi offers 360-degree views of the Swiss Alps, Lake Lucerne, and Lake Zug. The mineral baths at Rigi Kaltbad are a perfect way to relax while taking in the scenery. There are many hiking options you can choose from depending on your fitness level and time available. In winter, Rigi transforms into a winter wonderland, offering sledding, snowshoeing, and skiing opportunities.
Mount Pilatus: The Dragon Mountain
Getting There: You can reach Mount Pilatus by taking the world’s steepest cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad, or by taking the aerial cableways from Kriens. For a complete experience, consider the ‘Golden Round Trip,’ which includes a boat ride, cogwheel railway, cable car, and train. Make sure to walk up to the viewpoint at Pilatus Esel which offers unparalleled views of Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps.
Highlights: Mount Pilatus is famous for its dramatic cliffs and panoramic views. The mountain offers a range of activities, including hiking trails, a rope park, and the thrilling ‘Dragon Ride’ cable car. In the summer, you can also try the toboggan run at Fräkmüntegg. Book here
Stanserhorn: The Open-Air Cable Car Experience
Getting There: Take a train from Lucerne to Stans, then board the nostalgic funicular railway followed by the CabriO cable car, the world’s first open-air double-decker cable car. Book here
Highlights: Stanserhorn offers unobstructed panoramic views, making it a photographer’s dream. The revolving restaurant at the summit is perfect for dining with a view, and the suspended walkway provides an exhilarating experience for thrill-seekers.



Day 4: Lucerne to Grindelwald
On day four, you’ll travel from Lucerne to Grindelwald, one of Switzerland’s most picturesque mountain villages in the heart of the Bernese Oberland. The journey itself is a highlight, as you’ll be traveling on the Luzern-Interlaken Express, another segment of the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland (included in the Swiss Travel Pass.)
How to Get There
Luzern-Interlaken Express: The 1 hour 50-minute train ride takes you through some of the most scenic landscapes in Switzerland, passing by five alpine lakes and the snow-capped mountains of the Bernese Oberland. Lake Lungern and Lake Brienz are really stunning and depending on the season you see many waterfalls along the way in the lush green forests.
Interlaken to Grindelwald: Upon arriving in Interlaken, switch to a local train for a 36-minute ride to Grindelwald. The last part of the journey offers spectacular views as you approach the towering peaks surrounding Grindelwald.
By car: Worth noting, that the journey by car is not anything less spectacular. And you could even stop along the way for some more panoramic viewpoints at lake Lungern.
What to Do in Grindelwald
Explore Grindelwald Village: Grindelwald is a quintessential Swiss village, nestled at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains. Spend the day wandering through the village, enjoying the views, and perhaps visiting local shops and cafes. You can also visit already the Grindelwald First station with the famous Cliff walk or the Grindelwald Gorge.
Prepare for Tomorrow’s Adventure: Use this day to relax and prepare for the mountain excursions you’ll undertake on day five. Whether you’re planning to visit Jungfraujoch- Top of Europeor Grindelwald-First make sure you have everything you need for a day in the mountains.
Where to Stay in Grindelwald
Budget: Grindelwald Youth Hostel offers comfortable accommodation with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Mid-range: Hotel Gletschergarten is a charming, family-run hotel that offers traditional alpine hospitality. Belvedere Swiss Quality Hotels is a member of the Responsible Hotels of Switzerland and ticks off all aspects of a low impact travel.
Luxury: Bergwelt Grindelwald Design Hotel is a luxurious option, offering modern amenities and a stunning wellness area with both indoor and outdoor pools.



Day 5: Mountain Day Trip to Jungfrau or Grindelwald First
Today, you’ll have the option to explore either Jungfraujoch, known as the "Top of Europe", or Grindelwald-First the "Top of Adventure", an adventure-packed area with breathtaking views.
Jungfraujoch: The Top of Europe
Getting There: Take the Wengenalp Railway to Kleine Scheidegg, then switch to the Jungfrau Railway, which will take you through a tunnel in the Eiger Mountain up to Jungfraujoch. Alternatively, the faster Eiger Express tricable gondola can take you to the Eiger Glacier station, where you can catch the Jungfrau Railway for the final ascent. I truly recommend the Eiger Express not only for the efficiency but especially for the panoramic and impressive view of the Eiger North Face Wall and the valley views of Grindelwald village. Book your ticket here
Highlights: Jungfraujoch is home to the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454 meters above sea level. Visit the Sphinx Observatory for panoramic views of the Aletsch Glacier which is a UNESCO World Heritage site too! Then explore the Ice Palace with its stunning ice sculptures and the coldest tunnel in Europe, and enjoy year-round snow activities at the Snow Fun Park. Don't miss to get out during the 5 minutes stop at the eternal ice station st 3,160m you'll see on the huge glacier ice walls.

Grindelwald-First: The Top of Adventure
Getting There: Take the Grindelwald-First aerial cableway from the Grindelwald BGF station, located just a short walk from the village center.
Highlights: Grindelwald-First is an adventure lover’s paradise, offering activities like the First Flyer zipline, the First Glider, and the Cliff Walk by Tissot. For a more relaxing experience, hike to Bachalpsee, a beautiful alpine lake that offers reflections of the surrounding peaks on clear days. Book your ticket here
Which One to Choose?
Budget-Friendly: Grindelwald-First is more affordable and offers excellent value for money, especially if you’re interested in adventure activities. It is also more suitable for people who might encounter health problems getting up to such heights at Jungfraujoch.
Unbeatable Views: Jungfraujoch offers some of the most spectacular views in Switzerland, but it comes with a higher price tag. If it’s within your budget, the experience is unforgettable.




Day 6: Grindelwald to Interlaken via Lauterbrunnen
After a full day in the mountains, it’s time to head to Interlaken, a town nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Known as the adventure capital of Switzerland, Interlaken is the perfect base for exploring the Jungfrau region.
How to Get There
Train from Grindelwald to Interlaken: The journey takes just 36 minutes, offering beautiful views of the Bernese Oberland as you descend from the mountains.
What to Do in Interlaken
Visit Lauterbrunnen Valley: On your way to Interlaken, make a stop at Lauterbrunnen, one of the most beautiful valleys in Switzerland. Known for its 72 waterfalls, including the famous Staubbach Falls, Lauterbrunnen is a haven for nature lovers and photographers.
Cruise on Lake Thun or Lake Brienz: Interlaken’s location between two lakes makes it an ideal spot for a boat ride. Enjoy a scenic cruise on Lake Thun or Lake Brienz, taking in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and quaint lakeside villages.
Hike or Take the Funicular to Harder Kulm: For panoramic views of Interlaken and the surrounding mountains, take the funicular to Harder Kulm, Interlaken’s local mountain. The viewing platform offers breathtaking views, and there’s a restaurant where you can enjoy a meal with a view.
Where to Stay in Interlaken
Budget: Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof offers affordable, comfortable accommodation with excellent amenities, including a co-working space for digital nomads.
Mid-range: Swiss Inn & Apartments is a family-run hotel offering cozy rooms and a welcoming atmosphere.
Luxury: Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is a luxurious 5-star hotel offering world-class service, a stunning spa complex, and exquisite dining options.



Day 7: Explore Interlaken & Beyond
Day seven is your opportunity to delve deeper into what Interlaken has to offer. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or prefer a more relaxed pace, Interlaken has something for everyone. I suggest to do one of the activities below.
Top Activities in Interlaken:
Paragliding or Skydiving: Interlaken is famous for its paragliding and skydiving opportunities. Soar over the town and the lakes for an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the Jungfrau region. Book here or here
Visit Lauterbrunnen: If you haven’t had the chance yet, make sure to visit Lauterbrunnen and explore its waterfalls and scenic hiking trails. If you have the full day you can truly explore it to the fullest!
Kayaking or Cruise on Lake Brienz: For a different perspective, take a guided kayak tour or a cruise on Lake Brienz. The calm, turquoise waters make it a peaceful yet stunning experience.
Blausee or Oeschinensee: If you want to go on a full day of hiking experience you should head to the famous Oeschinensee and Blausee. These two lakes are in my opinion THE most beautiful lakes of Switzerland. Find my full guide to Oeschinensee here
Spa Day: If you need a break from outdoor activities, treat yourself to a spa day at Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa. Relax in the luxurious wellness facilities, complete with saunas, steam baths, and a heated indoor pool.



Day 8: Interlaken to Zermatt
On day eight, you’ll make your way to Zermatt, the famous resort town at the base of the Matterhorn, one of the most iconic mountains in the world. This place should never miss on a Switzerland trip. It is even for me as local a truly special place. I came for countless times and every time I am in awe by the beauty of the Matterhorn and charm of Zermatt village.
How to Get There
Panoramic option:
GoldenPass Express: Begin your journey by taking the GoldenPass Express from Interlaken to Montreux. This scenic train ride takes you through some of Switzerland’s most beautiful landscapes, including vineyards, alpine meadows, and lakes. The journey takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes, and you can upgrade to Prestige Class for an even more luxurious experience.
Montreux to Zermatt: After arriving in Montreux, switch to a train bound for Zermatt. The trip takes approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, passing through the Rhone Valley and offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
Direct option: If you want to skip the scenic train ride, you can head directly from Interlaken to Zermatt via Spiez and Visp. This takes you about 2 hours 15 minutes. And to be honest it is still very panoramic. The same goes by car. You will need to take the Lötschberg car tunnel that is a shortcut to reach Zermatt.
What to Do in Zermatt
Explore Zermatt Village: Zermatt is a car-free village, known for its charming streets, wooden chalets, and world-class restaurants. Spend your first day wandering through the village, visiting local shops, and enjoying a meal with a view of the Matterhorn.
Visit the Matterhorn Museum: Learn about the history of the Matterhorn and the mountaineers who have attempted to climb it at the Matterhorn Museum, located in the heart of Zermatt.
Where to Stay in Zermatt
Budget: Hotel Bahnhof offers affordable accommodation right next to the train station, perfect for budget travelers.
Mid-range: Hotel Bellerive is a stylish boutique hotel offering charming rooms making it a great choice for travelers looking for comfort at a reasonable price.
Luxury: Cervo Mountain Resort is my favorite go to place when I am in Zermatt. It's one of the most responsible and still luxurious options to choose- The food is great too by the way!



Day 9: Mountain Day Trip to Gornergrat or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
On your penultimate day, you’ll head up into the mountains for some of the best views in Switzerland. Choose between a trip to Gornergrat, 5 lakes hike or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, all offering unique experiences and breathtaking scenery.
Gornergratbahn: The Best Views of the Matterhorn
Getting There: Take the Gornergrat Railway from Zermatt for a scenic ride up to the summit of Gornergrat at 3'100 masl. Sit on the right-hand side of the train for the best views of the Matterhorn as you ascend.
Highlights: The Gornergrat offers unmatched panoramic views of the Matterhorn and the surrounding peaks. Stop at Rotenboden to visit Riffelsee Lake, where on a clear day, you can see the Matterhorn reflected in the water. The Gornergrat observatory is also a must-visit, offering insights into the starry skies above. Newly you can find an AR experience so called ZOOM! which is worth it too! Book here
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: Europe’s Highest Cable Car Station
Getting There: Board the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car at Zermatt Bergbahnen, a short walk from the train station. You’ll take two cable cars to reach the summit, located at 3,883 meters above sea level. Book in advance to save some money!
Highlights: Enjoy breathtaking views from Europe’s highest cable car station. Visit the Glacier Palace, an ice cave located beneath the glacier’s surface, and experience year-round skiing on the Theodul Glacier. The views from the top are nothing short of spectacular, but keep in mind that the altitude is very high, and it can be challenging for some visitors. But nonetheless, the views over the surrounding 4'000er mountains is just so incredibly spectacular. I find it also so impressive to see the Matterhorn from a different angle.
5 lakes hike
The 5 lakes hike is quite famous for it's stunning vistas on the Matterhorn. The 5 lakes Stellisee, Grünsee, Grindjisee, Moosjisee and Leisee are all unique and while you enjoy the panorama you might even encounter some of the black nose sheep! Read the full guide for the hike here
Which One to Choose?
Gornergrat: Offers better photo opportunities and is less commercialized, making it ideal for nature lovers and photographers.
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: Provides a more tourist-focused experience with additional activities like the Glacier Palace and the panorama platform.
5 lakes hike: For those in need for another active hiking day and amazing views.



Day 10: Zermatt to Zurich via the Glacier Express
Your 10-day Switzerland adventure concludes with one of the most famous train journeys in the world: the Glacier Express. This journey will take you from Zermatt to St. Moritz or Chur, offering some of the most spectacular views in the entire country. After such active days it is really nice to sit back and enjoy for a last time the panoramic Switzerland mountain views.
How to Get There
Glacier Express to St. Moritz: The full Glacier Express route from Zermatt to St. Moritz takes about 8 hours, passing through the Swiss Alps’ most scenic landscapes. From St. Moritz, you can catch a train to Zurich, which takes an additional 3 hours and 20 minutes. Book here
Glacier Express to Chur: If you prefer a shorter journey, take the Glacier Express to Chur, which takes about 5.5 hours. From Chur, it’s a 1-hour and 15-minute train ride to Zurich. Book here
Seat Reservations: While the Glacier Express is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, Eurail, or Interrail Pass, you’ll need to pay for a seat reservation, which can be booked in advance.
Note: If you have an additional day, it is worth to stay overnight in Chur or St.Moritz and enjoy the Southeastern part of Switzerland as well.



If You Have More Than 10 Days in Switzerland
Extend Your Swiss Adventure: Additional Destinations
If you have extra time, consider adding one of the following destinations to your itinerary:
Montreux / Lausanne: If you decide to take the GoldenPass Line to Montreux it is worth to stay for a day or more and visit also Lausanne and Lavaux. Not only is it the centre of the Olympic associations but Lavaux is another UNESCO enlisted destination with fantastic wine!
The Bernina Express: Extend your trip by taking the Bernina Express from St. Moritz or Chur to Tirano in northern Italy. This scenic train journey passes through the Swiss Alps and offers some of the most stunning views in Europe. Plus the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes is also UNESCO World Heritage!
More Time in Lucerne or Jungfrau Region: Spend additional days in Lucerne or the Jungfrau region to explore more mountain excursions or simply relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

If You Have Less Than 10 Days in Switzerland
If you have less time, consider the following adjustments to your itinerary in order to focus on Your must-see destinations or activities. Some suggestions are:
Skip Zurich: Head straight to Lucerne or the Jungfrau region if you’re more interested in outdoor adventures than city life.
Condense the Grindelwald/Interlaken Portion: Spend two days in the Jungfrau region instead of four, focusing on your top activities like Jungfraujoch or Lauterbrunnen.
Focus on the Cities: If you’re more interested in cultural experiences, consider spending more time in Zurich, Lucerne, and Basel, and less time in the mountains since travel time is long.
