Discover Vietnam, a land of breathtaking natural beauty and vibrant culture, perfectly blended with dynamic modern cities and rich historical landscapes. This comprehensive Vietnam Travel Guide is designed to help you navigate through the essentials of planning your Vietnam trip, ensuring a memorable and seamless experience.

Best Time to Visit

Vietnam's climate varies considerably from north to south, with optimal travel times varying by region. Generally, the best months to visit are from October to December, when the weather is more temperate across the country. This period avoids the heavy monsoons and hot summers typical in many regions, making it ideal for exploring the diverse landscapes Vietnam has to offer.Vietnam's extensive length results in varying climates from north to south. The best travel time largely depends on your destination within the country. We traveled in March and it was a perfect time.

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long Bay): The ideal months are from October to April when the weather is cooler and dryer.
  • Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An): Visit between January and August to avoid the rainy season.
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta): December to April offers dry and warm weather, perfect for exploring the urban and rural landscapes.

Visa Requirements

For most travelers, a visa is required to enter Vietnam. Fortunately, the process can be straightforward with the option of an e-visa for citizens of 80 countries. Ensure to keep an eye on the length of your visa and also a valid passport.

  • E-visa application: Simple and can be completed online. Start your e-visa application here.
  • Visa on arrival requires travelers to obtain a visa approval letter beforehand to get visa stamped at Vietnam international airport. Vietnam visa on arrival is used for air travel only. So it is much easier to have your visa already prior to arrival!

Essential Travel Tips

  • Currency and Payments: The Vietnamese Dong (VND) is the only currency accepted in most places. Credit cards are widely accepted in cities, but cash is king in rural areas
  • Language Tips: While Vietnamese is the official language, English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Learning a few basic Vietnamese phrases can enhance your interaction with locals. Especially in rural areas google translate was our best friend.
  • Health & Safety: Make sure to have vaccinations up to date and travel insurance before your trip. Always drink bottled water and be cautious with street food to avoid stomach upsets.
  • Cultural Norms: Vietnamese people are generally very polite and appreciative of visitors who try to adhere to their customs. Dress conservatively when visiting temples and always ask permission before taking photos of people.

Transportation

Vietnam's transportation network can cater to any travel style. While air travel is the most expensive but fastest for long distance, buses and train are a great and reliable alternative for shorter routes. Consider budget airlines like VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways which operate not only between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi but fly to all national Vietnamese hubs. Trains are scenic, though slower. The Reunification Express line is a popular choice among travelers and comes at a good price point. Buses offer the most economical and extensive network. For longer distances, opt for sleeper buses which are real luxury.

I used BookAway for easy and convenient booking of the various travel options. It shows you all possible ways of travel between cities, duration and prices. Most reliable in Vietnam compared to Google Maps and other navigation tools.

Accommodation

Accommodations in Vietnam cater to all preferences and budgets. There are fantastic Hotels, ranging from luxurious 5-star to budget-friendly 3-star hotels. Booking.com is my go to page and it is incredibly easy and reliable. Also hostels and homestays are really nice to travel budget friendly and experience local life and cuisine, especially in rural areas like Sapa and the Mekong Delta.

Food and Drink

Vietnamese cuisine is a delightful journey through the country's rich palette, known for its delicate balance of sweet, savory, sour, and spicy flavors, often accompanied by fragrant herbs. Here are a few culinary highlights:

  • Signature Dishes: Experience the comforting Pho (beef or chicken noodle soup) with a complex broth that simmers for hours to achieve its distinctive taste. Bun Cha, a Hanoi specialty, features grilled pork over a bed of rice noodles, typically enjoyed with heaps of greens and a tangy dipping sauce. Do not miss Banh Xeo, a sizzling, savory pancake stuffed with shrimp, pork, bean sprouts, and herbs.
  • Street Food: Delve into Vietnam’s street food scene to discover its soul. Savor the freshness of Goi Cuon (spring rolls wrapped in rice paper), or indulge in the crunchy and flavorful Banh Mi, a testament to Vietnam's French colonial past, often filled with a variety of meats, vegetables, and condiments. Book a cooking class in Hanoi
  • Beverages: Vietnam’s coffee culture is robust, and trying Vietnamese coffee, particularly the unique Egg Coffee in Hanoi—a creamy concoction made with coffee and whipped egg yolks—is a must. Also, explore regional teas and fresh fruit juices that reflect local produce.

Must-See Attractions

Vietnam's landscape is dotted with destinations that range from historic sites to natural wonders. Here's what not to miss in each region

North

Beyond the vibrant streets of Hanoi with its colonial charm, venture to the ethereal terraced rice fields of Sapa for breathtaking views and cultural encounters with local hill tribes. Ha Long Bay offers an unforgettable experience with its emerald waters dotted with limestone islands.

Central

The ancient capital of Hue boasts majestic palaces and tombs that echo the grandeur of past dynasties. Meanwhile, Hoi An remains a perfectly preserved example of a 15th-17th century trading port, with lantern-lit evenings that bring a magical feel to the cobbled streets. For beach lovers, Nha Trang offers golden shores and a bustling city vibe.

South

Dynamic Ho Chi Minh City provides a stark contrast with its soaring skyscrapers and bustling markets. The Cu Chi Tunnels present a stark reminder of the Vietnam War’s complexity. The lush landscapes of the Mekong Delta, with its network of rivers and islands, offer a glimpse into rural Vietnamese life with vibrant floating markets and quaint villages.

Shopping and Souvenirs

Vietnam's markets and boutiques offer a treasure trove of shopping opportunities:

Local Crafts

Look for exquisite silk garments, intricate handcrafted lacquerware, and stunning pieces of fine art. These items reflect centuries of craftsmanship and make perfect gifts or keepsakes.

Markets

Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of Hanoi’s Night Market or Ho Chi Minh City’s Ben Thanh Market, both offering everything from souvenirs to street food. These markets are ideal for experiencing the local hustle and purchasing unique items.

Souvenirs

Coffee lovers should purchase locally produced coffee, while cooking enthusiasts might appreciate spice kits and pho kits that bring Vietnamese flavors home. One of the best green teas is also from Vietnam, so if you are on a tour in the North make sure to stock up on the Worlds best green tea!

Practical Considerations

Staying connected and managing day-to-day needs is easy with a little planning:

Connectivity

Wi-Fi is ubiquitous in cafes and hotels. For constant connectivity, consider buying a local SIM card upon arrival.

Electrical Standards

Most outlets fit two-prong round or flat plugs. Carrying a universal adapter is advisable.

Vietnam offers an incredible diversity of experiences, from urban adventures in Ho Chi Minh City to tranquil moments in the rice fields of Sapa. With careful planning and a spirit of adventure, your visit to Vietnam can be nothing short of spectacular.
